Facebook and Instagram start selling blue checks with verified metadata

February 23, 2023

Facebook and Instagram users will soon have a new paid verified badge option in the form of Meta Verified. The $12-a-month subscription on the Web site and $15-a-month subscription on iOS and Android will give users a blue checkmark next to their account name for increased visibility in search, comments and recommendations, as well as copycat protection, priority customer support and exclusive features.

Users in Australia (A$19.99 on website and A$24.99 on mobile) and New Zealand (NZ$23.99 on website and NZ$29.99 on mobile) will be able to sign up for the new confirmation feature later this week.

Once a user applies for Meta Verified, they will need to verify their identity with a government-issued ID that matches their profile name and photo for their account. Accounts must also meet minimum activity requirements for previous posting history, and the owner must be at least 18 years old. As of now, companies are not eligible for meta-checking.

A big addition to the new verified plan is the proactive monitoring of account impersonation, which is a big problem on all social media platforms. Verified Meta users will also receive exclusive stickers for Stories and Reels, as well as 100 star tokens (Meta’s digital currency) per month, which are used to tip creators on Facebook. Facebook and Instagram accounts previously verified under the old fame and authenticity requirements will not be changed.
