Google I/O 2024: Gemini AI Model, Android 15 Innovations, and New AI Features

May 20, 2024

At the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, Google CEO Sundar Pichai concluded the annual Google I/O developer conference by noting that the word “AI” was mentioned 121 times during the keynote. This emphasis on artificial intelligence set the tone for the event, where Google unveiled significant updates across its vast array of products and services.

Gemini 1.5 Flash and Enhancements to Gemini 1.5 Pro

Google introduced a new AI model, Gemini 1.5 Flash, optimized for speed and efficiency. Positioned between the advanced Gemini 1.5 Pro and the lightweight Gemini 1.5 Nano, Flash aims to provide a balance of performance and cost-effectiveness. Notably, Flash retains features like a long context window of one million tokens, which differentiates Gemini Pro from its competitors. Additionally, Google plans to double this context window to two million tokens by the end of the year, enabling the processing of extensive content such as hours of video, audio, code, and text simultaneously.

Project Astra: The Universal AI Assistant

Google’s Project Astra, showcased by DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, promises to be an AI agent designed for everyday assistance. In a demonstration video, a user interacts with Astra by pointing their phone at various objects and receiving contextual information. The video culminates with the revelation that a pair of glasses equipped with cameras can seamlessly integrate with Astra, hinting at a potential rival to Meta’s smart glasses.

Advancements in Google Photos and Media Creation

Google Photos is set to become even more intelligent. U.S.-based Google One subscribers will soon be able to make complex queries like “show me the best photo from each national park I’ve visited.” The AI will utilize GPS data and its own criteria to deliver results. Additionally, users can generate captions for social media posts.

Google introduced Veo and Imagen 3, its new AI-powered media creation engines. Veo, capable of producing high-quality 1080p videos, aims to rival OpenAI’s Sora. Imagen 3, a text-to-image generator, promises superior text handling and photorealistic images, positioning it as a competitor to DALLE-3.

Transforming Google Search with AI

Significant changes are coming to Google Search. New features, available through Search Labs, include the ability to handle complex queries and plan meals or vacations. The AI Overview feature, which has been in testing, will soon provide AI-generated answers atop search results by default, rolling out to millions in the U.S. and globally by year’s end.

Android 15 Integration and New Features

Android 15 will integrate Gemini AI directly, allowing context-specific queries related to apps, images, or videos. This raises questions about the future of Google Assistant, which was not mentioned during the keynote. New anti-theft features in Android 15 will use AI to detect theft motions and lock the screen to protect user data.

WearOS 5 Promises Better Battery Life

Although not yet ready for release, WearOS 5 promises significant battery life improvements, consuming 20% less power than WearOS 4 during intensive activities like marathons. Developers also received a new guide on optimizing app power consumption.

A Suite of Additional Updates

Google announced various other enhancements, including digital watermarks for AI-generated content, Gemini integration in Gmail and Docs, a virtual AI teammate in Workspace, and real-time scam detection in phone calls.
