SpaceX Unveils Sleeker and Smarter Starlink Terminal: No Motor, Wider Field of View

November 20, 2023

SpaceX has launched the third generation of its Starlink terminal, revolutionizing satellite internet access. This lighter and thinner version ditches the motor for position adjustments, opting for a stand instead. Initially available to a select group in the U.S., this iteration boasts a 10% wider field of view, enhancing connectivity.

Notable improvements include upgraded protection against dust and moisture, now boasting a robust IP67 rating, allowing a theoretical submersion of up to 1 meter deep for half an hour. SpaceX recommends using a smartphone to locate the nearest satellite and manually adjusting the terminal using the provided stand.

The package includes the Starlink terminal, a kickstand, a 3rd generation router, a Starlink cable (15m), an AC cable (1.5m), and a power supply. With a weight of 2.9 kg (6.4 lb) and IP67 protection, it operates in temperatures ranging from -30°C to 50°C (-22°F to 122°F), withstanding wind speeds of 96 km/h+ (60 mph+). The terminal consumes a moderate 75 – 100 W.

Accompanying the terminal is the Starlink WiFi router, equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology, a tri-band radio, and two Ethernet LAN ports. Weighing 0.57 kg (1.25 lbs), it covers up to 297 m² (3,200 ft²) with an operating temperature range of -30°C to 50°C (-22°F to 122°F).

Completing the ensemble is the Starlink Power Supply, weighing 0.65 kg (1.43 lbs) with an IP66 rating and operating temperature from -30°C to 60°C (-22°F to 140°F).

This innovative iteration enhances SpaceX’s mission to provide seamless and advanced satellite internet connectivity, setting the stage for a new era in global communication.
