TikTok Music, ByteDance’s music streaming arm, is set to shut down on November 28, the company has confirmed. Despite attempts to leverage TikTok’s popularity to carve out a share of the streaming industry, the platform is now closing all accounts, and all user data and login information will be permanently deleted. The decision impacts users across Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Mexico, and Singapore, where the platform launched its services.
Google Play subscribers who paid for TikTok Music beyond November 28 will be issued automatic refunds or can manually request one through Google Play. However, Apple users will need to request refunds through Apple Support before the closure date. Users are cautioned that requesting a refund will immediately end their access to TikTok Music’s premium services.
For those who have built playlists on TikTok Music, the window to transfer playlists to another music platform closes on October 28, providing limited time for users to save their curated lists.
TikTok Music launched initially in Indonesia and Brazil in July 2023, following the discontinuation of ByteDance’s previous music platform, Resso. Later, it expanded as a closed beta in Australia, Mexico, and Singapore, fully launching in these regions by October 2023. Although ByteDance had registered a TikTok Music trademark in the U.S. in 2022, the platform ultimately didn’t expand into the American market, where it faced formidable competition from well-established players.
