Uber App Revolutionizes Ride-Hailing: Waymo Robotaxis Now Available in Phoenix

October 29, 2023

Uber has partnered with Waymo to offer robotaxi rides via its app in Phoenix, ushering in a new era of driverless transportation.

Autonomous Rides, No Human Driver

For the first time, Uber users can request rides on Waymo’s robotaxis, marking a pivotal moment in autonomous transportation. This service rollout follows Uber’s decision to discontinue its own robotaxi efforts. Now, riders in Phoenix can access autonomous rides within the Uber app when selecting UberX, Uber Green, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric categories, provided the car is available within the service area.

A Seamless User Experience

The Waymo robotaxi experience via Uber is designed to be as user-friendly as traditional rides. Fares for these autonomous rides are calculated upfront, ensuring transparency in pricing. When the Waymo robotaxi arrives at your location, passengers can unlock the vehicle by tapping a dedicated button within the Uber app. Once inside the cabin, another tap initiates the journey.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi shared his vision for this hybrid network, stating, “Expect the number of human drivers and driverless cars on the Uber platform to grow side-by-side for a long time to come as we continue to scale a hybrid global network that connects both modes.” This approach reflects the ongoing transition and coexistence of human-driven and autonomous vehicles within the ride-hailing industry.

Waymo’s Expansion and Partnership Impact

Waymo has been offering autonomous rides in Phoenix since 2020, and this partnership with Uber has the potential to attract a broader customer base. Waymo’s robotaxis already conduct over 10,000 trips in the Phoenix metropolitan area each week, signifying a growing acceptance of autonomous ride-hailing options.

In addition to Phoenix, Waymo has received the green light to operate fully in San Francisco, offering the potential to compete with Cruise, its autonomous driving rival. Cruise recently faced a setback when its permit was revoked due to a hit-and-run collision with a pedestrian, providing Waymo with a potential head start in the San Francisco market.

This landmark partnership between Uber and Waymo underscores the rapid evolution of the autonomous ride-hailing sector and the growing presence of self-driving vehicles in our daily transportation landscape. It serves as a milestone on the path to a future where autonomous vehicles play a more significant role in meeting transportation needs.
